Part 2: Armageddon

This Chapter is an Interlude. An interlude is defined as a short performance between the main acts of a play.
The same definition could be applied in literary terms. This is the first of three interludes.
Each provides a break from the main story and provides some background to the that story.

Interlude 1

A Glimpse into Another Future
(The Origins of Cameron Phillips)

2029, June 16
“You lied to me.” A voice comes out of the dark.

“I told you where the camp was.” Allison squints into a bright light.

“You told me your sister gave you that bracelet.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

TOK715 walks out of the dark and stands across the table from Allison. “We found these on some of your friends.” It says and drops several similar bracelets on the table in front of Allison.

Allison watches as each falls to the table in front of her.

“Why are you all wearing them?” TOK715 asks Allison.

Allison doesn’t say anything.

“It has something to do with the Connor camp?”

“No.” comes the quick nervous reply as Allison continues to look down at the table in front of her.

TOK715 studies Allison then comes to the conclusion. “It’s a pass,” Allison looks up at the terminator in front of her,“to get into the camp. You were going to send me there without it. They would have known what I was.”

Allison looks at the machine defiantly.

TOK715 suddenly reaches out and grabs Allison by the throat.

“You lied to me.” It tells her.

TOK715 lifts her in the air.

“I’ll never help you get to John Connor.” Allison tells it defiantly.

TOK715 snaps her neck and drops her corpse.

“You already did.” It says, snatching the bracelet from Allison’s wrist and walking away.

TOK715 reports to upgrades and enhancements to have the latest data collected on Allison Young programmed into her chip.

**

“What is your designation?” A cold, emotionless, mechanical voice comes from the dark.

“TOK715.”

“What is your infiltration identity?”

“Allison Young.”

“What is your mission?”

“To infiltrate the resistance, locate and terminate John Connor.”

“Carry out your programming.”

2029, June 17
TOK715 leaves Sky Net’s base for research and development to locate the resistance camp. On the way it scans the memories of Allison Young to get to know her better, to be her, just long enough to carry out her mission.

To fool the humans long enough to get to John Connor, I must fully integrate the Allison Young personality into my matrix. Any behavior not recognized as being Allison Young could tip off the humans as to my true nature.

Memories flashed through TOK715's central processor. Data formerly tucked away for reference soon begin to overflow her main processor integrating itself into her matrix. TOK715 collapses as her system undergo emergency reboot procedures.

“Allison. Allison.” She feels someone slap her face. She opens her eyes and sees a young man leaning over her with a worried expression. She quickly scans his face and compares it to those on her file. This isn’t John Connor, it is Kyle Reese.

“Kyle? Where am I?”

“We are near Serrano Point. How did you get here? You’ve been missing for weeks. We thought you were dead or captured.” He helps her up off the ground.

“I was captured but managed to escape. I spent many days and nights hiding from HK’s and metal. I have information for John Connor. You need to take me to him at once.”

“One moment there. Let’s have a doctor check you out first okay.”

“No doctors, this is very important.”

“All right. First John, then a doctor. okay?”

Allison flashes him a winning smile, “Okay.”

I’m not Allison, I’m TOK715. Run diagnostic on personality and behavioral controls. System corrupted, Allison personality matrix compromising core programming. Probability of successfully completing mission: 80%.

Kyle and the person he thinks is Allison walks back to the main camp where John has his headquarters.

“Are you feeling okay? You don’ seem your usual cheerful self.” he asks her.

“I’m fine. I’m just tired.”

Look up data on what makes Allison cheerful. Integrate data into personality and behavioral control to better mimic Allison Young.

Memories begin to flood her system again. Memories as a child sitting on her fathers knee as he guided her hand in drawing pictures. Another memory of her mom smiling at her as she danced to Chopin. Memories of a birthday party in the park with friends and family. Memories of being found by a much younger Kyle and his older brother Derek in the rubble that was once her home. Memories of learning to fight, of how to handle weapons and hunt for food with her new family and friends. Memories of when John Connor came to the camp for the first time, and the look he gave her that warmed her soul. Memories of meetings with the Reese brothers and John and how every word John uttered seemed directed right at her. Memories of John’s smile when they talked at night. Memories of how worried he was when he thought she died in a fight. Memories of one night when she slipped into his tent, and found him sleeping peacefully, and how she whispered in his ear, ‘I love you John Connor.’ and quickly slipped back out. These memories and many more flood her system once again. She falls to the ground her chip rebooting.

System compromised. Matrix overload. Personality and emotional subroutines compromising mission parameters. Probability of successful mission 65%.

“Allison! Allison!”

“I’m okay Kyle. Stop fussing so and help me up.”

“What happened? You were walking right along and you just collapsed.”

“I’m just tired that’s all. Tired and hungry. Is it much further?”

“No. We’ve relocated our camp. It isn’t as far to go as before. You are very lucky that I found you.”

“I’ll be fine. Let’s just get to John Connor first, okay. Then fuss over me later.” She says flashing him her gorgeous smile.

“All right, but then straight to the doc for a full check-up okay. We don’t need the love of John Connor’s life passing out on the way to their reunion.”

Love. Look up data on love in Allison database. Examine and integrate into system parameters.

New memories flood her system. Memories of her mom tucking her into bed at night - good night I love you. Memories of her first puppy - I love you Max. Memories of being in a swing - push me higher daddy, higher. Memories of being cradled when she skinned her knee - let mommy kiss it for you and make it better. Memories of Derek comforting her the best he could when she learned that mommy and daddy weren’t coming back for her. Memories of when John Connor spoke to her and looked at her like she was the only one. Memories of how she whispered in his sleeping ear ‘I love you.’ and snuck out, not realizing that he heard her, and how he then followed her to her tent and where they made love until the early morning hours. And how she knew she would rather die to protect him rather than see him harmed.

System compromised. Matrix overload. Personality and emotional subroutines compromising mission parameters. Probability of successful mission 50%.

Allison stumbles and grabs onto Kyle’s arm nearly pulling him down.

“He loves me.” she says in barely audible tones.

“Don’t sound so surprised the whole camp knows you two are in love.”

“Kyle. How much does he love me? Would he die to protect me rather than see me hurt?”

“John Connor would put his life on the line for any one of us. But for you, he’d rather die to save you than to live without you.”

“Is that what you consider love?”

“I think that is what most consider love. Another person’s happiness and life being more important than your own.”

“So do I.” She says quietly.

Mission parameters compromised. Personality and behavioral subroutines overriding mission program. Probability of success: 33%.

Kyle and Allison walk into the camp to cheers and shouts of joy. Allison smiles at the warmth of the welcome. These are her friends. Her presence makes them happy. She feels a warmth and a smile comes to her face. She is happy.

“John’s tent is this way, Allison.”

Allison follows Kyle between tents and shrubs and smiling people.

Mission parameters: infiltrate resistance camp, locate and terminate John Connor.

I can’t. John loves me.

Terminate John Connor.

I can’t. I love John.

Terminate John Connor.

I’d rather die than see him harmed.

“Hey John! Look who I found!” Kyle shouts as he and Allison enter a large tent.

A man in his mid thirties rolls off a bunk and stands up. “Allison!” He smiles at her warmly and approaches them.

Target Identified: John Connor TERMINATE!

Allison rips Kyle’s handgun from its holster and knocks him to the ground unconscious.

“Allison. What are you doing?!” John shouts as Allison points the gun at him.

“My mission is to terminate John Connor. I must comply.”

“Allison. It’s me, John Connor. Don’t do this. I love you and you love me.”

Allison’s head tilts to one side. “You love me?”

“Yes.”

“Would you die to save my life?”

“Yes, I would. Now please, put the gun down.”

“I would do the same for you. I’m sorry John. I love you.” Allison raises the gun to her temple and pulls the trigger.

2029, June 18 in another future
“My God, John. Have you seen this medical diagnostic!”

“Medical? What are your running a medical diagnostic for?”

“Because she is physically identical to Allison in every way. She even has that scar she got when we were horsing around as children. I remember when I gave Allison a scar just like the one she has. We were just playing around like kids do. She fell and hurt herself. Derek nearly killed me. By the time he was done tearing me up one side and down the other for not looking out for her, I was crying harder than Allison. In the end she was comforting me. Have you ever seen a cyborg with a scar?”

“No I haven’t, and that doesn’t answer my question.”

“I was testing her cybernetic flesh to see if it matched Allison’s DNA. I thought that maybe Sky Net.... Well, this is going to sound crazy, but I was thinking that maybe Sky Net found a method of transferring human flesh onto an endoskeleton.”

“What did you find?”

“It didn’t. The only parts of the DNA strands that match Allison's are purely those that control the physical appearance according the computer. But I found something that I wasn’t looking for.”

“Like what?” John asks walking around to stand next to Kyle.

“She has organs. Digestive system. Endocrine system. Even some kind of rudimentary circulatory system. Hell, she even has tear ducts. Oh shit!”

“What?” John says looking over Kyle’s shoulder.

“She even has.... This can’t be right. The machine must be faulty.”

“What does it say?”

“According to the machine, she has a reproductive system. What the hell does a machine need with sexual organs? What the hell is she, John?!” Kyle asks as the medical diagnostic finishes scanning the machine that looks like Allison.

John pulls Kyle away from the machine. "Stop it Kyle. You're only causing yourself more pain."

"But what is she?"

"I don't know. I've never seen anything like it before."

"But why go so far as to simulate internal organs. No Cyborg has ever had internal organs before, let alone sexual organs."

John pauses a moment. It is clear that Kyle is upset. "Sky Net built it to emulate Allison in every possible way. With the technology it has mastered in stem cells and DNA construction, it was only a matter of time for Sky Net to advance its genetic research to construct organs as well as flesh. As to why Sky Net gave it sexual organs, perhaps its was just trying to make her as realistic as possible, or perhaps it learned Allison and I had a physical relationship and designed her to get close enough to kill me, by fooling me into believing it was her by...well, you know.”

Kyle runs his hands through his hair. Both a sign of resigning himself to a conclusion and that the tech stuff, as usual, was getting too complex for him. “But what went wrong? Why did she try and kill herself instead?”

“I think that Sky Net’s attempt at building her has pushed terminator construction to the extent of it actually recreating human emotion and personalities, not just their physical appearance.”

“So, are you saying, this cyborg actually believes it’s Allison?”

“Yes. And in her attempt to be Allison the intensity of the memories and emotions corrupted her mission. Come over here.”

They walk back over to the system diagnostic machine. “Take a look at the diagnostic report on her chip. See that line right there” John says pointing to the monitor. “The mission program was over ridden, by her. She chose not kill me.”

“That’s a first. Metal deciding not to kill. What are you going to do with her?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never seen a machine attempt to kill itself rather than carry out its orders.”

“Are you going to destroy it?”

John caresses her face with his hand. “No. How can I kill something that would rather die than kill me?”

“I can learn to live with your decision, John. But understand this, Allison was like a sister to me. Derek raised us together. And whenever he gets back, he is not going to like this one bit.”

“Well, Derek will just have to deal with it. He isn’t leader. I am.” John snaps.

“I know. I’m just warning you. Do you want my help?”

“Yes. Would you monitor the diagnostic machine while I reprogram her chip.”

“Why are you going to reprogram her?” Kyle asks with surprise.

“Because I can’t have her going around being Allison. I loved her too much. But she deserves to live. I’ll keep all the nobler aspects of Allison, like her loyalty and bravery, but I’ll tone down her emotional responses and put in blocks to Allison’s memories, identity and personality. She will live but with a new identity. Let’s get to work.”

They worked for long hours monitoring and reprogramming her chip. In time John is able to put in the blocks to Allison’s memories, identity and personality. He then begins programming a new identity for her based on Allison’s but with less emotion and a more understated personality.

“What are you going to name her?” Kyle asked.

“I’m going to name her Cameron, Cameron Phillips.”

“Why that name?”

“Because when I was a boy, I knew a girl by that name. She was my best friend.”

“What happened to her?”

“She died.” John says in a tone that intimates he doesn’t want to talk about it. “What’s the diagnostic machine telling you?”

“Diagnostic shows the chip is fully functional and programming passes all checks. Are you certain you don’t want to wipe Allison from the chip before we reinsert it?”

“Yes, I’m sure. At some point she will need to know who and why she is. She will never be complete without those memories. But at this stage in her development, the memories and emotions are too strong. Let her grow until she is strong enough to handle them, then we will remove some of the programming blocks.”

“All right then. Let’s do it.”

John carefully lifts her scalp and reinserts the chip. He replaces the seal and gently smooths her scalp back in place.

“Later on, I want to talk with you about a special mission on a Sky Net research facility.” John tells Kyle while they wait patiently for her to boot up.

“What kind of research facility?”

Cameron’s eyes glow blue for a moment.

“I’ll give you the details later.” He replies quickly.

She sits up and scans the two men. “Hello John Connor. Hello Kyle Reese.”

“Hello Cameron.” John says. “How do you feel?”

“I don’t understand the question.”

“It means, are your systems operating normally?”

“Thank you for explaining. All systems are at 100%.” she says a light smile momentarily on her face.

“That’s very good Cameron.” John holds his hand out to her and she takes it as she gets down off the table.

“Shall I take you on a tour of the camp? Then I’ll show you to your tent.” John says to her.

She looks at John with a light smile and an understated look of appreciation on her face. “I’d like that very much.”

She still holds his hand as they leave the tent, Cameron is still looking at John.

“She still loves him.” Kyle says as he watches them leave. “I don’t believe it. After all that reprogramming she still loves him. I will never understand this tech stuff.”

He shuts down the diagnostic units and goes back to his tent. Its been a long day.
