A couple articles about the miltary's development of robots. They've already got prototypes in use.
I plan to order this guys book. He's done some great research on what the military is doing. This is pretty scary stuff. These thing will kill anything that moves. A PLAY with a difference has opened in Japan – it's cast is half robot, half human.
The theatrical production stars a pair of Mitsubishi's 'Wakamura' robots alongside two human actors. The robots play two depressed household servants who work for a young couple. But the robots grow tired of their mundane lifestyle and long to break free and see the world. The 20-minute piece titled Hataraku Watashi (I, Worker) was written by Japanese playwright Oriza Hirata and opened this week at Osaka University. The first night of the play received rave reviews. “It was very surprising,” said one guest. “You could see the robots thinking about how to respond - you could swear they were feeling emotion.”

In some cases, the scientists programmed the robot to agree with its human partner’s suggestion to fetch a particular object — matches, for example. In other trials, the robot began walking toward the suggested item, only to stop, turn around, and suggest something else — a lantern, say. When the robot was in agreement, the study participants preferred having their mechanical collaborator look right at them. During disagreements, however, their favorable impressions went up when the robot looked somewhere else. |

Very interesting article.
Can machines think? That was the question posed by the great mathematician Alan Turing. Half a century later six computers are about to converse with human interrogators in an experiment that will attempt to prove that the answer is yes. In the 'Turing test' a machine seeks to fool judges into believing that it could be human. The test is performed by conducting a text-based conversation on any subject.
