The Device
“Huh” John said confused. Derek and Sarah laughed. Sarah answered “Kilee had been acting a little weird lately so we had Agent Ellison place a GPS tracking system on the truck.” Derek continued “When we got up and saw that you three had left we called him up.” “And he tracked the truck.” “And we followed his directions.” “and here we are” Sarah concluded. “Okay” John said a little sarcastically. “Now tell us why you are here and you have that.” Sarah said pointing to the device that John had laid on the floor so that he could fly the helicopter. Now it was Kilee and John’s turn to exchange looks. Both wondering if they should tell the others or not. While they were silently debating this Cameron said “We are going to use the device and get Kyle Reese back.” “WHAT!!” Sarah and Derek shouted at the same time. John flinched and the helicopter swerved sideways. He brought it back under control and then Kilee answered. “It was Cameron’s idea. She heard that we were thinking about it but gave it up because I had not seen inside the other device. She remembered this.” “But it was only a one time use so Kilee will take it apart and look inside it to build another one.” Cameron supplied. Derek looked over at Sarah. Her face had gone white and she was starring out the window. He thought that he saw tears on her cheeks but she turned her face farther away. He wondered what she was thinking. If they succeed and saved Kyle he will be the same age he was when he had met her the first time, but she would have aged 16 years. Awkward! They flew on in silence for a time and then Derek realized that John was losing altitude. “Are we landing” he asked. “Yes” John said “Where” Sarah asked. “FBI headquarters. Thought that it would be the best place and they could get the helicopter back to them.” “NO John we can’t land there!” Derek and Sarah shouted together again. John laughed “Come on guys give me some credit. I am headed for Shangri la.” They relaxed and let him land on a flat surface above the caves. John, Kilee, Sarah and Derek waited in the caves as Cameron walked into town and stole a car. When she returned they came out to greet her only to see that she was in the passenger seat. Agent Ellison was driving. He got out of the car with Cameron and met the others. “What have you done know.” He said looking behind them at the helicopter. “We found that John here plays to much video games.” Derek joked. Sarah hit him in the stomached then answered “We needed a quick exit and now we need a ride home.” Ellison looked at them and then said “alright I will get you guys home then ‘find’ this thing and get it back to it’s owners.”
Once they returned home Kilee carried the device into the kitchen and set it on the table. John brought in the tool box and the five of them gathered around the table. Kilee spoke first. “I never told anyone this but before I came back I saw something that I have never forgotten.” They looked at her but she continued to stare at the device as she went on “John was watching me go when I saw Derek, myself and Kyle walk up beside him.” Sarah turned away and walked to the counter keeping her back to the others. Derek’s mouth fell open but he was to shocked to say anything. John looked at Kilee “You mean this could work?” Cameron said “Of course it will work.” Kilee looked at John “I think it already has sometime.” John just starred at her. “Okay lets get this thing open.” Kilee said. Sarah made a strange sound and then rushed out of the kitchen to the back yard. They all looked at each other and then Derek followed her. John, Cameron and Kilee started taking the device apart. As each layer was peeled away Kilee said things like ‘oh that’s interesting’ or ‘wow that was a neat idea’ and ‘interesting’ John’s favorite was ‘you beautiful wonderful thingy’ He couldn’t help laughing at the technical term of ‘thingy’. The device was in pieces when Derek and Sarah returned. Sarah’s face was red and blotchy and Derek looked a little uncomfortable and the front of his shirt was wet. Kilee just nodded at him and he seemed to relax. “Well what do we have here?” he asked. “A beautiful wonderful thingy.” John said Kilee slapped him in the back of the head and answered as John rubbed his head laughing. “We have a portable one use time placement device. The only trouble I see is figuring out which parts belong to the one use portion.” Sarah asked “How will this work. You go back you save Kyle somehow and then what? How do you go back?” Kilee looked at her “I do have a plan you know. I will need you to tell me exactly when he died, or at least as close as you can to the exact time and place. I will go back a few weeks earlier and build another device. Then I will get him and we will return here. “ “Leaving the device behind for someone else to find?” Sarah said. “Right well I haven’t thought of that.” “I could find the other device.” Cameron offered. “No” Kilee said “I could make it look like something unimportant or maybe put in a self destruct device.” Just then a light came into Kilee’s eyes. One that Derek hadn’t seen in a long time. She was excited about something. Her mind always needed constant stimulation and this was just perfect. A puzzle to solve. He smiled Kilee was back. His Kilee the old Kilee. Now things would get interesting and soon Kyle would be here!
