Work Begins
Once breakfast was over Kilee followed John out to the shed. Not really needing to eat Cameron had continued to work out in the shed while the others ate. When John and Kilee entered the building it was to see that the place was cleaned up. Four saw horses held two long boards to make two make shaft tables. On one was the parts to the time device and the bag that still held Kyle’s metallic head. The other table was mostly empty except on one end Cameron had placed the tools in neat rows. As John and Kilee looked around at what she had done Cameron said “I will fix the light s before dark. You have enough know to see what you need to. Kilee smiled at her and said “It looks great. Thank you.” Cameron nodded then finished what she was doing. When done she stepped back to reveal a desk with a computer, micro scope and a diagram of the device on it. “I thought this might be helpful.” she said pointing to it all. Kilee smiled again “It’s great!” she repeated. She noticed that the diagram was of the device put together, but beside it was a drawing of a diagram of a humanoid machine. Kilee bent down to study this. Seeing her looking at it Cameron said. “I thought you might need that.” Kilee nodded “It helps even though I worked in the factory that built your model. But there are some things in here I didn’t know about. Than you.” She turned to face the two teenagers “Now I need you to leave so I can work in peace.” Cameron walked out without another word, but John hesitated. Kilee was going over the parts of the device when he spoke a few minutes later. “What would he think of me? I mean as a father?” he looked down at his hands. Kilee laid the part down that she had been examining. She had wondered when this would come up. Then she turned to face him. John had seen her move out of the corner of his eye then said “He doesn’t even know about me yet.” Kilee walked over to him and forced his face up to look at her, he didn’t resist. “Kyle Reese always looked up to you. He was really proud of the fact that he was working under you, in your camp. You were like a mentor to him.” Then she laughed. John looked at her puzzled. “I just thought of something very ironic.” John continued to look confused. “He looked at you as a father figure.” They laughed together. Then John said “How old will he be when you bring him back.” “He was 24 when he went back, he will still be that age when I retrieve him.” John looked down again, his mom was 35. How would that work? Kilee seemed to sense what he was thinking. “Age doesn’t matter you know. Just look at Demi and Ashton.” John nodded but continued to look any where but at her. Kilee waited. Finally John said “What about the two of you, what is your real relationship?” Kilee looked puzzled so John added “Most guy/girl friends well they end up you know intimate.” Kilee nodded. “We did try that once.” John’s head snapped up and he looked at her shocked. Kilee laughed at the expression on his face. “Don’t be so shocked it wasn’t anything weird. We were about, well I was about 13, Kyle was 16. It was shortly after they got me back from the machine camp. We kissed that was all, but it was like kissing your relative. It didn’t go any further than that. Your mom doesn’t need to worry about anything trust me.” “What’s that suppose to mean?” “Jus that ever since you gave Kyle that picture of her, he never really was interested in any one else. I mean he had girlfriend or sex buddies whatever you want to call them, but nothing serious. We all did.” John was surprised by this. He never really thought of his dad with anyone else. He turned to leave when Kilee said “He shares your views you know.” “What?” “On the machines, he believes that they are not all bad. That some can help us. He will never say that in front of Derek though. When Kyle comes back Sarah may see a whole new person. The Kyle I know is different around me than he is around his brother. He always looks for Derek’s approval. Derek is the only father he really remembers, so try not to be to hard on him okay?” John sighed “It is going to be more difficult because he will only be like eight years older than me. I will do my best not to freak him out.” “That’s not what I mean.” she walked over to him and placed her hand on his shoulder. “I mean don’t expect him to just jump in and be the father you have always wanted. He is different. Let him be your friend. I am afraid that is the only relationship you two are ever meant to have.” John nodded then said “Well I will go so that you can get some work done.” he walked away before Kilee could say anything else. He had a lot to think about.
In the weeks that followed Cameron fixed the lighting in the shed. Kilee spent most of her time in the shed. She had looked over the device and tore apart the Kyle head. As she thought there was only some basic computer stuff in there. Things to make the face move naturally. It would be easy to duplicate in 1984. The device would be harder. But not impossible as she looked it over she found that some of the parts she could still use. She separated them and built some others until it came to where she needed some supplies that she didn’t have, and she knew they were running low on funds again. Well she would find a way to get it. Derek could use a real outing and Sarah doesn’t need to know as long as Kilee could keep John out of it.
She walked in and found John and Derek setting at the table. She walked over and sat down “I need some more materials to finish the device.” “What do you need?” John asked. “Stuff that I can get but I need funds.” “Which we don’t have.” Derek said leaning back in the chair. “But we can get.” They looked at each other and John said “Mom won’t like that.” Kilee looked at him “That is why we need you to keep her out of the way.” John’s eyes grew huge “ME! Why can’t we just have Cameron knock her out and tie her up. It will be a lot easier trust me.” They laughed and then Kilee said “You two need some mother son bonding.” “Okay I will see what I can do. When do you need this distraction?” John asked. “Day after tomorrow.” “Okay” “So then where dose that leave me” Derek asked. “The gunman.” Kilee said. Derek pulled the gun from he holster and said “Something I am good at.” Kilee and John looked at each other with knowing smiles.
