Stan Winston dieds age 62 - a brilliant man and special effects man!!!
The Oscar -winning special effects artist who turned Arnold Schwarenegger into the Terminator that we know so well has died aged 62
Arnold , speaking of his death on sunday said The entertainment industry has lost a genius and a very good friend.
But personally i think that he was a brilliant man and with out him the Terminator trilogy wouldn't be possible he will be sadly missed by us all!!!
He won 4 Oscars for his work Terminator 2: Judgment day, Aliens and Jurassic Park.
If you want to put something towards this thread about Stan then you can do (of course!!)

Terminator special effects suggestion...
I understand that CGI is such a widely used tool these days, and that isn't all bad.
However, I think it would be a great idea to do a sort of Jurassic Park and Terminator 1 & 2's melding of physical animatronic props and photo realistic CGI. What I'm getting at is that your props department should create a few "hero" endoskeleton animatronic puppets of various models for close up and medium shots (or when physical contact with actors or the set is called for) that don't require advanced full body motion like running, jumping, etc.
There just is something special about a physical object rather than a soley computer generated object. It's very hard to create"weight" with a 3D drawing, even today. It still doesn't feel "right." Also, it makes it easier for the actors to work with a real object on the set rather than just imagining what they're looking at or reacting to.
That was definitely a weakness IMHO with T3 (one of many) that they relied on such obvious CGI creations.
If there is some way to work with Stan Winston again (the co-creator of the endoskeleton designs and physical puppets along with James Cameron's sketches, according to what I've read) on these props (even as a consultant), that would be uber cool.
Cheers.

McG Has Updated His T4 Blog
http://rss.warnerbros.com/terminatorsalvation/2008/06/in_memoriam.html
In Memoriam
Stan Winston passed away this past weekend. What an unbelievable talent.
Think of everything that came from the mind of that man. Aliens. Jurassic Park. Iron Man. Terminator.
I wish all of you could go check out the shop that he built. There's a meeting room where all of his creations encircle you. It feels like the first time you went to Disneyland or saw Star Wars. It's an unforgettable moment.
Most of all, Stan was a good guy who was in it for all the right reasons. He loved what he did.
Stan confided in me once, that he created imaginary monsters as a child to keep him company. He said he felt like the only kid in the world who did this. Little did he know his childhood friends would come to be the heroes of millions. You are not alone Stan, the fruit of your imagination will be with us forever.
It is a real honor to have had the opportunity to work with Stan Winston. I intend to dedicate this film to his memory.
McG

Atomic Al, haha I love that. That's so funny they did actually get that idea from Jurassic Park because I totally thought of that movie when I first saw it.

The Marvel of Another Stan - We Remember Stan Winston
"While Stan Lee has always had the mantle of “Stan the Man” for me, there is another Stan that made innovation, quality work, outstanding work ethic and memories in both the arena of television and feature films, that will last a lifetime. I am of course talking about the master - nay - Father, of modern practical special effects, Stan Winston, who died yesterday - Father’s Day 2008.
Stan had tickled my imagination in 1982’s “The Thing” - a movie my father introduced me to the same year that my best friend Carl and I went to see so many movies that kindled the spirit for The 2GuysTalking Podcast. The Thing, starring Kurt Russell and an assortment of nightmare-conjuring beasties, is one of my many favorite movies that have adorned my collection over the years that feature magical, otherworldly memories that will always stay with me. Stan made a life of creating monsters, body damage and other visual tools that allowed a myriad of directors to take audiences on amazing rides that will continue to last a lifetime and helped to create the truly special effects that were and are always elements of the focus of all of our TERMINATOR Podcasts.
A different kind of undeniable monster finally took Stan to that special effects house in the final frontier yesterday, Father’s Day. Cancer can be a cruel and terror-inducing experience, but I am happy to know that Stan could and probably DID create at LEAST something more horrifying to cause even Cancer to tremble.
Visit below to read the conclusion of this article (too long for an entry here, sadly) http://2guystalking.com/2gttrb/?p=844" We will miss him. He has a great legacy under his belt.
-Terminator 2 -Jurassic Park Movies -The Time Machine Movie -Star Wars
He will leave a great legacy and will be missed. Hopefully his creature company will continue to make great monsters for films. Because when a master disappears somtimes companys go bad. But anyhow let's look on with positivity. Because the gift god gives is everlasting life.
with respect, Krazykaleb

Best Quote of the Night...
"I don't know why but I crack up everytime I watch the scene where Cam and Sarah watch the training video. Sarah just keeps looking at Cam and she's staring at the screen, mesmorized by the squirrel. If I were Lena, I'd have to shove my fist in my mouth to keep from laughing my arse off! and then when the lady comes in and talks to them and Cam's little smile...makes me melt. I go "awwww" everytime. not really a quote but my favorite scene, that STILL has me giggling 5 run-throughs later. lol." :D
That film reminded me of the one about genetics in Jurassic Park.
I think it was cool too

Name your Sci-Fi Favorites
"Curious to hear what your other Sci-Fi favorites out there are--Name other movies or TV shows that you are fanatical about. Does anything compare to T:SCC or the Terminator franchise?" Nothing compares to TSCC....But I'm a fan of Firefly, BSG, Stargate Atlantis, The original BSG was good too, as was Space: 1999 (going way back). Movies:T2 is one of my all time favorites, Total Recall, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Transformers, and Blade Runner.

First Shirley Manson PIC on set as Catherine Weaver
I have "Only Happy when it Rains" running through my head for some reason :P
I agree with Schmacky...I envision a character who wants to "win at any cost"...no matter what.
I am reminded of this line from Jurassic Park (Ian Malcolm) .."You're scientists where so obsessed with whether or not they could....that they didnt stop to think if they should"

What do you think of Danny Elfman's Music to the Movie?
I'm glad someone started a thread about this...I think the music is a big part of any movie.
I picked up the soundtrack and was sorely disappointed. I agree with others that think Bear McCreary's music on TSCC was WAY better. Most of my favorite SciFi movies have great soundtracks: Jurassic Park, T2, The Matrix, Spider-Man...

Natural Cycle?
"I do think John reprogrammed Cameron but it would be an interesting angle if Cameron had become self-aware and had chosen to rebel against skynet." That is an interesting thought.
There was a line in Jurassic Park that goes something like "Life finds a way", well , in this case..it wasnt life per se that found a way...it may have been a robot that found a way, and in turn become more human than we first thought.

So, question...
I liked Spielberg's War of the Worlds, but two things bothered me.
First, the battle scene that wasn't shown. Ray Ferrier runs up the hill chasing his son Robbie while Rachel is left by the tree. All the military equipment goes up the hill, too. Tanks, helicopters, humvees, etc. And the Martians are on the other side of the hill. At this point I am waiting for a big battle scene, but no, all we get is some burning humvees rolling back. There is a lot of flame and then the Martian machines rise into view. Hey!! Where's the war in war of the worlds if there isn't a battle scene?
Second, Ray is in the basement with Ogilvy and he has to shut him up because Ogilvy is making too much noise. Ray tells Rachel to close her eyes and cover her ears and sing a song then Ray goes to knock out or kill Ogilvy behind a closed door. We don't get to see the fight. Come on, what is that?!! Are we to be treated like Rachel and protected from seeing the fight?
I thought these two omissions were so glaring that they made the movie significantly less enjoyable for me. I thought it showed a gross intrusion of the producer's personal inhibitions or phobias into what should have been a natural flow of story exposition. I couldn't enjoy the movie after those scenes.
Reflecting back, I see this as a common thread in Spielberg movies. Notably, the humans were depicted as unprincipled, incautious, and inept with weapons in Jurassic Park. Despite having a lot of guns, they seldom prevailed against the dinosaurs. I got the clear impression that Spielberg wanted to show the dinos as so superior to humans. We looked ineffectual in ET and Close Encounters, too.
Ah, well. Still great movies, nevertheless, eh?
