40. RE: What do you think the connection is between Derek and Cameron?
Mar 24 2008, 4:55 PM EDT
Oh here we go....Cameron resembles a girl that Derek once loved and that's what made the whole torture scene so tramatic? At first John though having a robot that looked like a girl that Derek once loved would help him proves to backfire since Skynet also discovered the relationship and used it to mess with Derek's mind. So now everytime Derek looks at her he is torn.

"Maybe Cameron is more like Seven of Nine. Human first, and altered by the Borg. Cameron could have been a fighter in the war on machines, and was "saved" by future John. Using Skynet's own tools, John "created" Cameron. Maybe all that was left of Cameron was her brain which he placed onto a terminator's body. Not as farfetched as it sounds, since this was a premise of a Star Trek episode where Spock's brain was stolen and used to run a computer system similar to Skynet."I like this idea -- this is one of the directions they could go in to explain why she is different. Derek could have known her when she was fully human and after his encounter with her in the basement he now knows she's a machine(would he believe her former self was human or a lying infiltrator?). In the dance scene (if it was the way you suggested) maybe in seeing her dance the thought that ran through his mind was - is there anything still human about her(is her soul still there). I could really see a conflict with him in that. Lot of interesting things they could do with that one. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"My vision of what Terminator is all about is the focus on the humans and their fight for survival. The Terminators are merely the antagonists. In a movie about a Tornado rampaging the countryside, you wouldn't focus on the Tornado's personality, so the same should be said about the Terminators. I see them more as a force of nature type antagonist, not an evil humanistic one."A tornado rampaging the countryside wouldn't be chasing you. Terminators aren't merely antagonists in that vein, because they act with purpose. I think, in order for the series to remain interesting the purposes of the terminators are going to have to be explored - purposes beyond "killing John". -- "Oh there's a hurricane and we have to survive" "There's an earthquake we have to survive." "This week it's a flood we have to survive." "Next week it's an avalanche we have to survive." might be interesting, but it's not the same as unrelenting attacks by machines that are purposefully out to get you. I thin the series is going to hae to flesh out the machines' motivation. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

It's like Andy said when he was talking to Sarah about he Turk -- that it(Turk)would solve the same problem one way and then a different way the next day and then sometimes it couldn't solve it at all. If it was doing that at that stage there is no telling what it may be doing(thinking) now after all these years. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The English language is a funny thing in that a dozen people can hear exactly the same sentence and take away from it entirely different meanings, so I give you a small simple conversation between Derek and Cameron“You might have fooled them but not me, I know you” “I know you too” I may be wrong but there’s something about this simple exchange that bothers me, the emphasis on certain words leads me to think that there is more being said than was said. I don’t read anything into Cameron’s reply other than a statement of fact that they have met in the bunker as we have seen in the flashback episode. Derek’s statement I can take two ways, 1st. you may have fooled John and Sarah into thinking that you are part of the team, a “real” person if you will, but I know what you really are so you can’t fool me 2nd. you may have fooled them that you are here simply to help John and Sarah but I know why you are “really” here because we have met before (the basement perhaps) Derek is constantly dropping hints about Cameron like he knows more than he’s saying, I find it very interesting 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Did Derek really think that Cameron gave up the location of the safe house to Vick?Ok lets look at how Derek explains this, he comes into the kitchen where John, Sarah and Cameron are gathered and plonks down Vicks chip then goes on to make the argument that Cameron is their enemy and told the T888 where the safe house was……????????? What’s wrong with this picture? Derek isn’t stupid, he more than anyone knows what a Terminator can do, he wouldn’t expose her like that if he really thought she was the enemy because it would be suicide to do so. Logically he should have pulled John and Sarah aside then made his argument without Cameron knowing what was being said, so why didn’t he? He’s clearly trying to undermine her position in the group but whether its because of some type of prejudice or because he knows more than he’s letting on we’re going to have to wait to find out 4 out of 4 found this valuable. "Derek is constantly dropping hints about Cameron like he knows more than he’s saying, I find it very interesting "I think that to believe Cameron is less that truthful in saying she's here to help the Connor's Derek would have to distrust in some way future-John who sent Cameron. Derek may know or suspect Kyle is dead because of a mission John sent him on that makes Derek harbor ill-will toward John and with it a basic mistrust. Derek may just distrust John's judgment in general. Derek may harbor such hatred of machines that he loses faith in John and mistrusts John's investment in using machines for good purposes. Or, Derek may just hate machines so much he's incapable of trusting one ever regadless of the circumstances. I, actually, tend to give Derek the benefit of the doubt on this matter. I think Derek just hates machines so much he can't trust one no matter what the circumstances. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Here's my take on this, having almost no knowledge of terminator-human behaviours.. :P1. The Cameron model terminator IS mass produced. In 'Heavy Metal', she says that she and many others like her were built at the bunker. She might have some different bits in her that future JC put in there, but fundamentally, she's mass produced like a toaster. 2. Derek does not trust Cameron. It does sound personal to me. As an infiltrator, she will be programmed to use other means to get close to the target. She MIGHT have seduced Derek in the future to get into the resistance base to get close to and kill John Connor. This is a very interesting sub-plot that the writers will explore in the 2nd season. 3. Cameron does seem to have another mission other than keep John Connor alive. Again, another sub-plot that the writers will probably expand on in the 2nd Season. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

If Derek knows something about Cameron, why doesn't he just tell Sarah or John what it is? Here hasn't done that, so it's more likely something "personal" between Derek and Cameron. I still believe that Cameron was once human (a fighter in John's Army) who was transformed from a human to a Cyborg. Derek remembers her as she was and cannot come to grips with what she is now. My other hypothesis is Cameron was/is future John's daughter, and Derek was in love with her.

"Derek’s statement I can take two ways, 1st. you may have fooled John and Sarah into thinking that you are part of the team, a “real” person if you will, but I know what you really are so you can’t fool meWhat really hits me about this is the fact that she doesn't try to act human around them -- she doesn't try to fool them since they know what she is. Occasionally she seems more human around John but most of the time her actions are that of a machine. Taken this way (at least to me) it does give the impression that that he has been fooled before and he's going out of his way to make sure it doesn't happen again. John (when he was talking to Cameron about Cromartie not showing up back at the school) said he had to remind himself that in the core of her chip she was just like him(Cromartie). I think Derek may be feeling vunerable with Cameron there -- that like John he is having to remind himself of what she really is. He's fought the machines basically for most of his life and now he's living with one up close and personal -- one that seems all too human. So he's going overboard to keep it in his head as to what she really is -- the dance scene didn't help any either. Talk about confusion. 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

I think we are overthinking the significance of Derek's mistrust. I think it's easily explained in the flashback episode. "Sometimes the go bad". It's simple as the resistance reprogrammed Terminators, but Derek ran afoul of a reprogrammed Terminator that "went bad". He was almost killed. Sarah and Connor have never had this expierence and they trust a reprogrammed Terminator stays that way. They don't know Cameron (or any Terminator) like he does. They are always a threat even when reprogrammed. As for Cameron's response, it was just a typical Terminator "innocent" response. Taking Derek's meaning too literal (I know you, you're Cameron the protector Terminator), she responds, "I know you too." (Your Derek, the freedom fighter from the future). Call it an AI glitch if you will.

If Derek has so much antipathy for Cameron, why would he be getting the hots for her while watching her ballet dance? Also, I don't think he or the crew he was with were tortured all that much, if at all... Even if they were being tested by John for their trip with the time machine... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

If Cameron was a threat to John and or Sarah Connor at any time. Then Derek would terminator her ASAP with extreme prejudice. As far as the "I know you" exchange only the writer know. The place that Cameron said she was built was a small factory. Mass produce? No. A small batch run or a jobber run is more possible. I do not see the RF makeing a large run of Cameron models. Skynet would find them is short order. The factory was on grade. As special as Cameron is only a few might be possible. I think that Derek and the others at that place were the music was playing were used for their blood to make Cameron models skin. Like Cromartie did in the bathtub.

We know that Skynet or Sky Net (?) gets the templates for the outer flesh covering from past records of humans who volunteered to be laser scanned as well as from captured rebel fighters/humans. So I feel she was a resistance fighter captured and killed by Skynet, one with whom he was enamoured and possibly 'involved' with. Therefore to me, it would explain how he knew he was a "metal" as soon as he clapped eyes on her. Then again she might have been the 'operative' that was doing whatever to Derek and the others in the basement. As we know Skynet doesn't produce terminators with a unique flesh covering. They are made with specific model numbers that correspond to a certain 'look'. It stands to reason that if the Cameron model was built off an assembly line like all the other terminators then there would be more than one of her model number. Since it isn't detailed she's some sort of prototype. Some one suggested that the whole experience involving Derek and the others was arranged by John Connor to test their loyality and suitability for special missions. Hence being given a hatchet (strange tool for Skynet). Then again they may simply have been tracked. Although the underground tunnels were wiped clean of humans by a detatchment of Skynet's finest. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Remember, he has been fighting "metal" for years and now he essentially has to stop. That would be very difficult for anyone when the "metal" is trying to whack you!""You can't kill The Metal. The Metal will live on. No one can destroy The Metal. The Metal will strike you down with a vicious blow. We are the vanquished foes of The Metal. We tried to win for why we don not know. METAL! It comes from Hell!" Sorry, couldn't resist, lolol. That is a pretty interesting line of thought about Derek's blood being collected for the bio-disguise. I think that actually might we what happened becuase when Vick scans her, his HUD says Unknown Cyborg, so she definitely has a custom bio-disguise, imo. It is possible John did build Cameron although I'm not too sure on the possibility of that. Do you find this valuable? |

""You can't kill The Metal. The Metal will live on. No one can destroy The Metal. The Metal will strike you down with a vicious blow. We are the vanquished foes of The Metal. We tried to win for why we don not know. METAL! It comes from Hell!"Highly improbable John Connor and the resistance could manage to create a flesh covered terminator of their own. Given the severe limitations in terms of technology and resources imposed on them by the conditions of fighting a guerilla war against Skynet. The "Vick" model T-888 registering Cameron as a 'unknown cyborg' could simply mean that it doesn't recognise that specific terminator. Unless it's a mich newer model that Skynet made after "Vick" was activated? 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
