1. RE: What is the difference between a robot and a cyborg?
Mar 28 2008, 12:55 PM EDT
Well, the cold, hard definitions:Cyborg: Cybernetic organism. A living being who contains cybernetic or bionic parts to replace and / or enhance physical parts. The term was coined in 1960 when Manfred Clynes and Nathan Kline used it to describe a self-regulating human-machine system in outer space. Examples would include "Seven of Nine", "RoboCop", "Six Million Dollar Man", and the Replicants in "Blade Runner". Robot: a machine that resembles a human and does mechanical, routine tasks on command. . Examples would include Robbie the Robot in "Forbidden Planet", Gort in "The Day The Earth Stood Still", and Huey, Dewey and Louie (Drones 02, 01 and in absence 03 respectively) from the movie "Silent Running". 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Depends which is the major Michelle. Some cyborgs could be major human, so if you take off the human parts, wont rest anything usefull. Do you find this valuable? |

"If you take the skin and flesh off the cyborg doesn't that make it a robot?"No. A cyborg is an organism that is a self-regulating integration of artificial and natural systems, or so says Wikipedia. Do you find this valuable? |

"Not that I am disagreeing with you, but unless there is verification, I would take everything on Wikipedia with a grain of salt.Wikipedia is reliable but you do have to be careful. Cyborgs are machine enhanced humans i.e. human brain, thinking but enhanced other body parts. Thats what i learned from dragonball Z 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

terminators r suppose to be robots. cyborgs really have to be part organic part machine, and would require both elements to function.the borg in star trek is the perfect example. cyborgs do NOT need to be human. cybernetic organism, any thing organic augmented with artificial components can be classified as cyborg 2 out of 2 found this valuable. An Android is a robot made to resemble a human; but is not made up of real human parts. My favorite comic growing up was The New Teen Titans and they have a hero on the team named Cyborg. He is basically half man half machine. So was Darth Vader as well as Luke after he got his replacement hand. I guess the Terminators would be some kind of synthetic Cyborg because although their flesh is alive it was never part of a living being. It was manufactured.

"No. A cyborg is an organism that is a self-regulating integration of artificial and natural systems, or so says Wikipedia. "Responding to my own post again: So, if this is right then Arnie's terminator was not a cyborg, because he functioned perfectly well without his flesh after it was burned off. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. How about this.....the terminators are simply flesh-covered robots. Like you said, Chopped Liver, they can function without their flesh...so that would really make them robots..not cyborgs. I presume a cyborg is at least half human..in the case of terminators, there is nothing in them that is human. So I would say they are robots. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

And let me expound on my previous post...some may say that their flesh makes them half human....but I was referring to organs, a brain, etc.. some part of a cyborg is still human. Do you find this valuable? |

IN order for a cyborg to function, its mechanical parts need to marry to the flesh parts.

Like a dog with a artifical hip?I vote for Android, a robot that appears to be a human. A Terminator isn't a Cyborg for all the reasons above. You remove the meat parts of a Termantor and they operate fine. You remove the meat parts of a Borg and you got a useless pile of junk. Do you find this valuable? |

I believe cyborg is intended to mean a living organism that has had parts of its anatomy replaced with artificial replacement parts, and you could argue that since this would be the reverse after a fashion for a Terminator that the word doesn’t apply to them. However there have been times when if there wasn’t a word in existence to describe something the nearest equivalent was used, so a Terminator could be termed a cyborg by default.

If either organic or machine half can survive without the other,I don't think it'sa proper cyborg. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
