The nightmare was supposed to make John search for that "spark" in her eyes that made her the Cameron he knew. In the dream he couldn't see that "spark" so when he woke up he looked into her eyes and saw it. That's why he's no longer afraid, because he had proof that Cameron was back to normal. "
