Why Guns ?
Jan 29 2009, 9:44 AM EST | Post edited: Jan 29 2009, 9:44 AM EST
In T1 and T:SCC they always carry small Firearms... What for, I wonder...?
Every Time the Terminator eats the Bullets like Candy and just don't care... Unless it's a Shotgun, automatic Weapons or Explosives it doesn't stop...
Nevermind...

You're absolutely right: They really need more instances of Summer Glau's clothing being disintegrated. ;)

Well there are still considerable benefits to having guns...
1) They can defend you from humans - which the TSCC crew regularly have problems with...
2) It is psychologically beneficial to have a weapon than no weapon. By arming yourself with a gun your determined to fight - which is more beneficial to the mind than accepting that you have no hope and shouldn't even bother with a weapon.
3) Even a pistol can prevent a Terminator from completing a mission... In Sarah's Dream (during Pilot) she shoots the Terminator in the eye and it "flinches." It has to re-aim at John, which gives John longer to escape. Of course, it wasn't enough, but it did something. Guns are typically used to distract Terminators JUST as they are starting to pwn Cameron... Whenever Cameron starts losing, Sarah shoots the Trip-8 and distracts it long enough for Cameron to recover.

The real reasons?
1. They're small and light enough to keep concealed on you at all times. Some people won't even take their whole key-ring when they walk the dog.
2. They're better than NOTHING.
3. (I love this one from Bill Porter at the Smith & Wesson Academy) "They allow you to fight your way back to the rifle you never should have set down in the first place."
4. Building on what Deadpool says, a handgun might distract and/or deter an attacker long enough for a loved one to get to cover (or a big enough gun to do the job properly).
5. A full-sized rifle or shotgun would be a better defense, but would draw too much attention to someone trying to keep a low profile.

I wonder sometimes if one of the sub-texts of TSCC is that handguns in the real world don't really offer any protection, despite the eagerness of Americans to Keep and Bear them. After my bicycle and I being used for target practice by an axe-throwing passenger in a passing logging truck, I support the RKBA.

While the knowledge that I might be carrying MIGHT not deter the initial attack, the handgun gives me hope of surviving any attempt to "finish me off".

As Cameron so gently put it in "Self Made Man: "... in case I need it..."

Okay, Okay, Wild-Kat.

6. Character use of small arms on the show reminds us how un-stoppable the Terminators are.
7. Character use of small arms on the show spices up the action factor.

I was thinking something similar myself. Surely something with a bit more stopping power would be more useful than a 9mm? Do you find this valuable?

While some of the guns may not be very powerful they do make good imagery . . .seeing Summer Glau with two guns behind her back is a really cool image =) 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Handguns are secondary weapons unless they're out in public then it is a primary weapon. In the Mousetrap, Sarah and Derek went out to find Cromartie.. they had big ol weapons.. Alpine Fields when they went searching for a Term and protecing the Fields, Sarah and Cameron had shotguns and big ol weapons. During Mr. Ferguson when they were taking down Cromartie, they had shotguns and rifles.

They don't go in to a scenerio knowing there will be Terms with just a handgun. It's backup and sometimes, a handgun is all you can have on your person because you're out in public and with Sarah and Derek being fugitives.. I think carrying around big ol' guns in public would be a bad thing.

I've noticed this too. Maybe the waiting time for a handgun permit is shorter? Do you find this valuable?

1) small arms are easy to conceal
2) it would be in convenient to carry around full sized shot guns and assault rifles
3) it's easier for them to get their hands on small weapons
4) while they aren't going to stop a terminator, they will slow one down.

I hope nothing bad happened to you.

I have of course had the same Ideas... That's how it is in REAL Life... But a 9mm...? A larger Caliber would - ofcourse - be better... Make you feel even more safe... And frankly: I think it was just BLIND LUCK, that she managed to hit "Bulls Eye"... And of course it'll distract the Shooter, when being hit... But I really do think that SkyNET in that matter would've compensated for this, but strangely enough they don't make use of it... We've seen Cromartie run and turn quick, so...

And as I wrote: Small Firearms... (like the small 9mm)...

BTW... I found this Article that might be of Interest (but you probably already know it):

http://www.articlesbase.com/sports-and-fitness-articles/the-desert-eagle-pistol-three-firearms-in-one-282768.html
"... The Desert Eagle is one of the few pistols that can be switched into a variety of different calibers with simple replacing of the barrel and bolt. Featuring the option of making Desert Eagle 50 ae pistols, Desert Eagle 44 or 357 in a matter of minutes makes this firearm very versatile. Also considering the advancement in power, the Desert Eagle is not particularly larger then standard full sized pistols. ..."
