Why don't Terminators come back and make more Terminators?
Mar 15 2009, 1:15 PM EDT | Post edited: Mar 15 2009, 1:15 PM EDT
Since we know Terminators know how to repair themsleves (Cam, Uncle Bob, Cromatie), and can even regenerate skin from an entire body, why not have them come back and set up show like CW is doing?

They don't get into trouble until they cross SC or try to kill someone that the Conners also have an interest in.

But if they send a few back, knowing how to get the raw materials, find the needed techs and scientists, put it all together in a lab - they could break into vaults and hacks computers to raise money - and build everything they need. End result would not be a fair fight.

What if they built a fleet of killer hunter-seeker spiders like in Minority Report instead of big bulky humans? Or something that humans would never really notice, that could hide away and simply kill you in your sleep? A killer worm that stabs you through the ear and destroys your brain from inside would be pretty effective. As metal it's be hard to detect, and wouldn't need to be that big.

They wouldn't even need a big chip as a low function or remotely controlled operative. And you could build these by the thousands.

Send a T-1000 like CW back to run the show and their virtually indestructable so they could even download Skynet programming from the future and Skynet could set up show here.

Why doesn't Skynet think of these things?

You are right. I asked that myself, too.

Why doesn't Skynet copy itself, goes with an T1000 back in time and let the Terminator infiltrate an military complex and "install" Skynet on their network?

The only reason I can think of is, that some resistance fighters, after Skynet finished its plan, would also go back in time and prevent that scenario. But then would Skynet again.... and then the resistance fighter ... Skynet ... Uh, this time traveling concept is dificult...

I always figured that Skynet's priorities were as follows.

1 - Ensure existence
2 - Wipe out threats to existence

It's not so much about destroying humanity as it is keeping itself "alive". To Skynet, everything it does is an act of self-preservation. Building hunter-seeker spiders would blow its cover, and humans are in large stock these days. Sending back a Terminator to create Skynet is pointless; in one form or another, the AI is already being built. The Terms do nothing more than make sure it happens.

To answer your ultimate question, Skynet doesn't think of these things because it doesn't have to.

Chris there are SO many ways that Skynet would be effective in killing the human race.. both in the future and the past. But the thing is.. if they do that, there's no show.. there's no movie... it'd be over. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I think skynet has been coming back and doing what it can. But just like the humans, they have limited resources to do it with. Both the terms and the humans are coming from a period of protracted warfare. And 'the terminators' may be one master AI proccessing the strategy for its entire force. Do you find this valuable?

2nd best thing you've ever said...

PS, I hope they don't win. Even life with reality TV is better than no life at all!

I agree with Schmacky.

The only reason we can live with this show and movies it to somewhat believe that time travel is limited or extremely risky or cost-consuming. If it were or could be like taking breakfast, Skynet could easily win and wipe out the human race at any given point in History, specially in earlier centuries, where weapons and means to fight it would be even much more rudimentary than they are now.
I'm guessing just a dozen of terminators could maybe extinguish the whole human race in pre-historic times, just over a few months "work".

I'm also guessing James Cameron didn't give much thought to this. Just by watching the movies, you felt time travel was something very rare and unique. It was TSCC that made more trivial, I think. Oh, well...

Very true, but I don't think the Geico mascots would be able to build Skynet way back when; the entire purpose of time travel was to ensure existence, no?

I discussed this in another thread, about Skynet not wanting it's own creations - Terminators - becoming self aware and rebelling against it.

They put a dampner chip in T-600's and above to prevent this. They made 1000 T-1000's but only activated a few bc the were scared of them too.

JC in the future uses Terminators who do become self aware and they help each other with the T civil war with Skynet as the mutual enemy. This is according to Terminator novels on T1 and T2.

So I actually kinda had the answer. But as Schmacky says, that's end all of it if this played out. Better top think Skynet just doesn't have an interest for whatever reason, and we're lucky they don't make these types of considerations.

Unions.

There's already enough unemployment in the manufacturing industry. The unions won't let any "robot, time immigrants" appear and start stealing American jobs (South Park style - "Goobacks.")

Well, Skynet's purpose may be to ensure existence, but it's objective is to wipe out the human race, and at least this latest objective could be achieved way back in History.

As for Skynet coming to existence, I don't know. Maybe it would take many years to develop from that early in History, but having centuries of knowledge in advance would certainly be of use. Stark was pretty resourceful in the 1920's. Much further ahead, I know, I know...

Not at all implausible, actually. They'd certainly have to make do with what they had, sure, but with millenia upon millenia of knowledge to use and build upon, bringing Skynet forth wouldn't be too much of a problem, come to think of it. The human race wiped out, Skynet coming about with no resistance. Like humanity with metal endoskeletons once they reach a certain point.

The killer robobugs are a cool idea (what was that movie with Tom Selleck?) but humans have already built and stockpiled enough weaponry to do the job already.

As for why they don't go back to the Neolithic age and start there, I don't know. Maybe skynet doesn't want to build its own competition either.

If Skynet wipes out mankind in the past, there's nobody left to create Skynet. Terminators can repair themselves, but they don't know how to create an artificial intelligence. That's why it needs humans to do it for them. Every machine it's ever sent back has been purely to preserve itself and make sure that it's created. Also, humans that far back are of no threat or consequence to Skynet.

I agree with the idea that time travel is very costly (in terms of resources and power consumption, etc) and so it uses the technology sparingly.

"Runaway" with Tom Selleck.

As for going back to the Neolithic era, a wild guess would be that the further you displace time, the more energy it requires. Skynet has to pay the power bill to you know =D

Not so sure about that. Skynet's economic division has the power grids bought and paid for. And those pesky humans are constantly siphoning it, too...bastards.

I don't think the few hundred terminators that skynet could manage to send back would be able to build an entire industrial civilization capable of creating skynet. Plus, the more terminators there are wandering around in the past the better chance people have of discovering their existence. Once that happens Skynet is completely screwed. It's not like it would be hard to eliminate it, the government just has to make sure not to give computer systems control of our nukes. Problem solved. Do you find this valuable?
