"It's actually not really a good thing; if I may explain: an actor's performance should stand or fall on its own merits. You should be able to separate an actor's performance from however you might feel about the actor as a person.

Is it distressing to watch Summer's character Paige Pratt being chased (and presumably attacked, I never made it that far ;-) or is it distressing to watch Summer herself being chased, even if she's only acting? I never saw that ep of Cold Case so I don't know anything about the character.

A TV or movie critic should be detached and impartial, however I'm not a critic so I feel I'm free to take whatever I want from an actor's performance. It's something I do think about though, I justify it in that I think Summer's other performances are so authentic and realistic that it's easy to blur the line between the actor and the character."
I saw her as the girl in the show. Just before it happened she was so excited and happy, thats what made it so bad. She really loved the guy and then he did that. Also when she was running away and it cut to a flashback of her running for her running team that really got me. I think Summer just does a great job of getting you to care about the character she is playing as her acting style is very life like. Argh i don't wanna think about it any more, ive tried to erase that show from my mind lol.

I was talking about the character.

But still....its hard for me to watch a scene like that, even if it is only acting.

Kinda like the way violence is portrayed sometimes..........you know its fake, but its your imagination that runs away with you.....sort of like, "What if this really happened"

"oooh yeah!
I love it!!!

I also love her entire performance in "Objects in Space" I remember first time I saw it I was sad cus
1. Thought she'd been absorbed by the ship,
2. Thought she was actually gonna go with that bounty hunter guy.

Then Mal came to save the day and River was saved wooo!!!
That episode was so badass, was funny but at the same time very psychological.... plus I especially loved Mal and River in space at the end "You know... you ain't quite right" "That's the popular theory""
i always change what episode is my favorite. but that is in the top few. love her pretending to be the ship.

"Yeah that was an awesome scene, the director did an awesome job on that.

I liked the scene on Serenity when Malcolm sneaks up behind River when shes tapping away on the computer then all of a sudden she quickly holds her gun up to point at him lol. The way the scene is shot looked really well done. Then when he says "you better shoot me now" *River cocks back the hammer* "or not..." lol.

According to the commentary on the Blu-ray Summer had difficulty holding the gun still as it was to heavy for her to hold behind her like that. The scene where she clicks the hammer back the gun is resting on a tripod out of shot. "
He said, "You best shoot me now" *click* "or, we could talk more."

Yes the gun was perfectly still when she cocked it, it was pretty obvious that it was supported.
I think they should do something like that when Cameron is shooting while running (like the scene in Lighthouse), they should support the gun on a wire from a trolley out of shot, so that as Cameron runs the gun remains perfectly aimed... but then I suppose it would be hard to explain why Cameron should miss anything...

Yeah thats another sad scene with Summer. When she says about not belonging and the camera goes to all the different rooms in the ship as the crew are listening to her.

But that episode was also full of comedy so it balanced out perfectly. Jubal was a legend.

The scene in that episode where she does Morris dancing? is beautiful. I think its the first time shes really happy and it was so nice to see. Then later on theres another tear jerker moment when shes explaining to Simon that she knows how much he has given up to take care of her.

OMG i really want another series of Firefly =(.

I know I quoted you T but I was really thinking about myself, no criticism of you intended.

I'm certainly not complaining, for me it's wonderful and even novel to actually get emotionally involved with fictional characters and stories on TV. I agree with Mark A: "I think Summer just does a great job of getting you to care about the character she is playing as her acting style is very life like."

Re your point about the portrayal of violence, I do think there is a risk that we can become desensitized to violence, so often portrayed with little consequence (except when JF makes us sit through a vigil ;-) so it is good that we can still be shocked and disturbed.

And yes I'm aware of the irony of talking in such terms about an actor who portrays a stone-cold killer!

well, paige wasn't at all like summer, and i thought she portrayed her very authentically, it was paige you felt awful for. even so, devoted fans of herS is gonna have a gut reaction of NO RUN SUMMER I'LL KILL YOU YOU BASTARD DON'T KILL HER SHE CAN KILL YOU WITH HER BRAIN YOU BASTARD, that's oNly natural. doesn't mean she's doing anything wrong though, and normal people (lol) will only care about the character.

my favorite river scene is the beginning of objects in space, when we get a look inside her head and see just how isolated and confusing her world is. that made be really feel for river, and i thought summer did great.

I remember when I first saw the R.Tam sessions on YouTube just after becoming a Browncoat...

Summer was just so dang creepifying and amazing and she REALLY made me sympathize with River. I think that's when I realized just how special of an actress Summer is.

The "I can see you" bit scared me soooo bad... O_O

"is that the stick gun scene?"
yeah, that whole scene when she's walking through serenity and looking in from the outside at everyone's lives and what they're really feeling, ending with the stick gun scene. "it's getting very very crowded in here!". so affecting.

i didnt see those until much later. i watched the series when it aired, liked it, but wouldnt have been considered a browncoat. i watched it much later and then became obsessed. and she is awesome in those videos. honestly, summer wasnt even close to my favorite character on firefly the first like 5 times i watched the series (still isnt a definitive number one favorite on that show even though she is my favorite actress). she just has so many lines that steal shows that she eventually took that role as either my favorite or close to it.

I see...no harm done :)

Most characters, even though they are fictional, go through some of the same things that us "real people" do...so its easy to get emotionally involved. Such as BF/GF type situations or the death of someone in a family, etc...

Summer does have a very "life like" style to her portrayals. :) She really gets you involved to the point where you're like "No, dont do that!"..........or "Watch out, they're going to get you!"...etc.. And if her character gets hurt, you just wanna reach in through the screen and help her.

RUN SUMMER RUNNNN!!!!! LOL!

It's a bit like the FF "witch burning" scene: "Post-holer. Digging holes for posts", the way that River is so out of it and doesn't appear to know what's going on makes it so much more upsetting - "DON'T YOU DARE BURN RIVER YOU BASTARDS!"

I *love* the beginning of Objects for the same reasons, hard to pick a fav River scene but perhaps one is River "channeling" Badger, really shows off her acting: suddenly snapping from crazy child-like weirdo to sassy Cockney lass, just wonderful!
