Bear McCreary musical score appreciation thread!
Apr 19 2009, 4:03 AM EDT
I just got the soundtrack for TSCC a few days ago. I'd always thought TSCC's score was effective, but holy cow, you REALLY have to listen to it on its own to get the full effect. This show's theme is downright HAUNTING, and I love it! The original score by Brad Fiedel may only be homaged in McCreary's, but honestly I don't really miss it. Overall I think that Bear has done an excellent job on this show's soundtrack, and I think he deserves a thread of appreciation. So hats off to one of the best TV composers I've heard in years!BTW, he also is behind Battlestar Galactica's soundtrack, which also kicks all sorts of butt. 5 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

I absolutely agree, the musical score makes good scenes in the show simply incredible. Especially at the end of 'Born to Run', when they played 'Sarah's Theme' as John was meeting the Resistance, I thought it was incredibly moving.

Guys, we dropped rom 6-9 in the Amazon sales list. If you have any intention of buying the S-2 DVD set, do it now while it counts. Lets keep those sales Figures up and give WB and Halcyon reason to film and market a season 3. High sales figures and a Top 10 listing in Amazon will give them something solid to show FOX or any other network they may negotiate with. So put your money where your mouth is and order now while it counts. Tell your friends and family. Ask for it for your birthday, you can always regift. Better yet you cn cancel if you change your mind any time between ordering and shipping, which is in August. So BUY, BUY, Buy> Let's save this show ourselves.

Seconded. I guess the soundtrack isn't very important for many viewers, still when you have a quality one you have a show even better. I like a lot the "I love you" and "the Sarah's theme" tracks. And Shirley's S&D of course.

"..... I'd always thought TSCC's score was effective, but holy cow, you REALLY have to listen to it on its own to get the full effect. This show's theme is downright HAUNTING, and I love it! ........."Right on! I listen to this CD agaian and again, it never gets old. You realise when listening to it just how much of the composition you DON'T hear during the show. Samson and Delilah is a case in point, listen to the track in during actual episode then compare it to what is on the CD. Big difference. Bear's music sets the mood of scenes well, it happens subconsciously (as any decent score should). Maybe us tscc fans should pay a visit to his blog, get him to open up about his TSCC work. He's talked alot about his other stuff, especially BSG, but strangely not about TSCC..... Do you find this valuable? |

"I love McCreary's work in TSCC but if I were him I may be a little prouder of the BSG theme. IMO that is an iconic work in the tradition of the original Star Trek. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

IN TSCC music is underutilized, if anything lately I noticed slight buzzing and beeping when we were in JH's basement. In BSG I love the unique drum rolls that happen to signal various type scenes. it makes you sit up in your chair ! 1 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I like all the musics from the Soundtrack, (well maybe except Atomic's Al...) especially Sarah's Theme and Perfect Creatures, so thx Bear!"I actually loved Atomic's AI, because I love cartoons and it pretty much encapsulated every old timey cartoon music meme that exists. It was very amusing to see Bear tackling that genre. :D Also, I love "Aint We Famous," because it matched the scene it was for perfectly. It was sexy and cool, just like Cameron. ;) Do you find this valuable? |

Bear's done a superb job. He's encapsulated the tone and vibe of Brad Fiedel's original scores from both movies yet making it his own excellent variation. The original movie theme melody is played once to it's entirety in the pilot at the end. The stalking them when Arnold was walking around is played at a faster abbreviated beat when proto-H&K attacks and Cam invades the Zeria basement. When Cam is doing the gunfight, the music is similar to when Arnold keeps Sarah and John in the elevator and faces the remaining SWAT team just before taking over the gas gun , knowing he's going to get shot up before he starts maiming them in the legs with his single pistol. The T2 bad robot dronne dronne from T2; Bear has a somewhat subdued yet heavy variation, a lot of Cromartie's stalking, some of Queeg when he attacks, and other terminators "bad" mode etc. I actually like Bear's Sarah theme sweet wistful theme more than the "soft" music in T2 and most of T1.Do you find this valuable? |
