Do Not Edit Other People's Fiction
Jun 27 2009, 11:23 AM EDT | Post edited: Jun 27 2009, 11:23 AM EDT
I am disappointed that someone had to take it upon themselves to edit the latest chapter to my novel, Reunion. The error was minor, but the correction was mine to make not theirs. It is against the policy of this website to edit other people's fanfiction without their permission. My permission was not given. My consent will never be given. If you think there is an error, in spelling, in grammar, or in technical detail, then write me and let me know. If I choose to revise my work based on your suggestion, then it is my choice to make and not yours. Leave my work alone. Any editing is mine to make, and mine alone.

Not that I had anything to do with it, but I can't believe anyone else could edit your file. Obviously someone did, which to me tells me that there are not any safeguards against other people screwing with someone else's fanfics or pictures.

Sorry to hear that.

Nobody edited your fanfic "Reunion" but you (and Tali, but the was a month ago and I'm guessing you are talking about something more recent).

The update was called U. :) Not a real date at all.

So, that's probably the hax moment.

Probably, but that was several days ago. And he's updated it many times since then.

And that updated was done by The1Russter himself.

True, but a master hax user could make it look like he updated it. :)

I don't know. Several days, or now, maybe the hacker is amazingly powerful. :)
Or the OP has Multiple personalities.

A genius hacker with OCD?

"GAH! HE MADE A TYPO! Must ... fix ... and hide true identity ... "

Anywho, Zkyire says it all. No one edited it but him. Could it be that he edited it while drunk?

THE SITUATION HAS BEEN RESOLVED. A well meaning person edited the latest chapter to my story, Reunion. He meant well, but he did so without my foreknowledge or permission.

My only purpose in starting this thread was to bring to light that even if well meant, editing other peoples work should not be done without first getting the author's permission.

I have had help with my story, especially when I first began posting it. Talli was a great help. She has helped many on this website. I have continued to edit my own work, long after posting it. Sometimes when I type in the phrase "Updated mm-dd-yyyyy" sometimes I accidentally only get 'u' simply because I only typed 'u' to bring up the list of previous update phrases but forget o select before saving. MY fault. The mouse clicks faster than I type.

I try to proofread my work before posting. I edit it right up to the moment I copy it to the webpage and even afterwards. I don't catch all errors. I'm not perfect. After I complete my story, then I will collectively revise all chapters and repost it at a later date.

Please don't let this discussion snowball into wild theories and discussions. Just be respectful of other peoples work. That is all I want people to do after reading the thread I started. Okay.

OKay, well, fair enough... How exactly did someone other than you edit it though? You have to tell me, because I'd like to know how. :) Do you find this valuable?

Now... play nice.

IIRC, someone went around last year deleting everybody's fanfics, but the problem was resolved and I'd thought that safeguards had been implemented. Seems not...

I had this happen to me when a "well meaning fan" deleted my entire page bc they felt it might be noticed by TPTB at Fox/WB and "look bad" to them as it reflects on the show...

It was resolved, but wow, that was quite an experience.

Fans should not edit other fans work or their fan pages. It's bad enough trolls come around and hijack threads and start flame wars.

Please, be polite, and use some common self, people: Golden rule, ya know?

I don't know how he did it. I thought there were safeguards as well. I though I was the only one who could edit my work and I thought other contributors could only edit their own work.

I had a moderator contact me and he said I could have my fanfiction page locked to prevent others from tampering with it. That is good, but I still need to edit my story. If I write something new and it requires editing something previously written, that would mean contacting the moderator every time I needed to make an edit. Can't be done. I'm always tweaking my story.

You have to do it that way. Just save up a "batch" of changes and do it all at one time - say maybe once/twice a week with mod ok in advance of your scheduled updates. That might work best.

You can track who went in and made the changes, even without a mod. All activity on your page is logged. The meatball who crossed the line can be found and nuked, but you said it was handled, so no worries...

The edit function is a pain in the whatzoo, granted: I tried saving an entire page and bringing it over from Word, but the paragraph breaks get funky. Have to go in and fix them manually.

Meanwhile, before you can get your latest up on the wiki the wind has shifted in TSCC-ville and something new is all the buzz. Hard to keep up.

I'd like to read your fan fic, but time is tight. I'm committed to Talli's - which is good even tho I'm not a Jameron fan - and I can't read all the entries in the contest one per day. They should have multiple categories and multiple winners - like a top three per. Just my take, IMO, etc.

Whatever.

NO I wasn't. I received a notification in my email that someone had made an u[pdate to my page Chapter 08 Trust and Fear. I checked it out and the person had made a change to a sentence. He meant well by his actions, but he did so without first asking my permission. I only started this thread so that others would keep in mind the guidelines of this website about editing other people's work.

You are right about saving up a batch of changes. I will probably do that. I've already revised most of the chapters I have already posted. All minor grammatical or typographical errors for the most part. Any changes I make online are made on my files and vice-versa. Sometimes errors are easier to spot in one format over the other.

I haven't read Talli's story. I did take a look at the first couple of chapters a while back.. I'm pretty committed to writing and haven't got much time for reading. Besides I don't want other peoples work to influence me. Writing is hard enough without worrying if this plot detail or that theme is too similar to someone else's.
