Pirates are the divine beings of Pastafarianism.
My religion is going into a nose dive with this news. :(

How would you Christians like it if I shot down a bunch of angels?!

Yeah, but the thing is, the only times I've used torrents I've had bad experiences. One time I downloaded something from the Pirate Bay and it contained a virus. Had to reinstall Windows when my comp got infected, fortunately all my files were backed up. Do you find this valuable?

2.) EDIT downvoting the end of Piratebay, that is pretty lame, whoever you are."
1.) Ah yes. Pastafarianism. I guess it's time to read the book again.

2.) Yeah, it's lame. But I don't think the intent is malicious, it's just someone who's ignorant about the ways of Pirates vs. the Content Industry. The best weapon against such people is to educate them. So, person who's downvoting... What's your beef with my words exactly? Tell me what bothers you, so that I may enlighten you.

Nothing can save your download speed.
We Pastafarians are now too few in number to replenish the world's pirate population.

Actually 8 million is dirt cheap for a business that is as big as TPB is, think of how many people daily interact with their servers. Now all you have to do is come up with a business model to actually legally make money.
Napster sold for 86 million in 2002.

Millions of people use Bittorrent all the time and never have any problems, you try it once and you get infected? Sounds extremely fishy to me. What exactly did you try to download? And why didn't you check the comments?

Also, one bad experience (if you really had it) and you condemn the entire Bittorrent network?

No offense, but it sounds to me like you're trying to spread FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt). But I'm too educated in the ways of Pirates, it won't work.

Okay, that bad experience was the second comic book file I downloaded, specifically the Batman "Hush" storyline in its entirety. As for not checking the comments, I didn't know any better, I'd never used torrents before these 2 instances.

As for condemning the entire network, I think I have the right to be more than a little wary when a torrent file, which is really a copied file and taken from an unofficial source, infects my computer with a virus and I have to reinstall Windows. That's a really bad thing to happen to a PC as I'm sure you're aware. Wouldn't you be skeevy if this happens one of the first times you use something?

No, I never went back after that. It's scared me off. Call me chicken if you want but I never want to go through something like that again if I can avoid it.

Why were you downloading Batman... and not say... DEADPOOL?!
(Especially Batman that was written by Jeph Loeb... Did you know that prink tried to make Wolverine into "Lupus Sapien" - which has earned him a reserved room at Pescadero?)

Ok, you had a bad experience. But as you can seen here, we're quite versed in the workings of Bittorrent. So condemning something we use regularly came on as a bit strong.

It's also possible I overreacted. But it's because of your "copy protection" post, which gave me the impression that you have an anti-piracy agenda.

I think downloading from internets is good.

"Actually, if you can go everywhere you're gonna see a lot of people downloading to the Internet and the website, and everything they want. But I think it is much better for the development and...eh...to inform people what they want and to get the easy way and so faster if they are looking for."

"In fairness, these guys did carry the fight all the way to jail. They took a strong stand for as long as possible.

It's a shame the studios can't accept that file sharing builds an audience. It's no different than using a DVR. People like a show and watch it in many different ways. Some watch it live, some record on vhs, others dvr or fileshare. It's all part of the viewership/fanbase behind a show. TSCC had a huge international audience primarily because of filesharing."
Do the words "Tragedy of the Commons' mean anything to you?

Because seriously, this is the dumbest thing I've ever read. It doesn't matter how many fans you have if you CAN'T MAKE A DIME OFF OF IT. Getting shit free, and I don't mean send in the 25 upc labels for the secret decoder ring free, the buy 8 get the 9th one free, I mean zero effort just type it in the search engine and go free completely distorts the market, and claiming that it is profitable betrays an inexcusable ignorance of not just fundamental economics but fundamental human nature. Cost isn't just a reflection of a thing's demand, it is a fundamental driver; what is a rip off at $100.00 might be a steel at $25.00, but it absolutely becomes stupid *not* to take it at free - it literally changes the entire equation of demand to make something free; when it costs something, even a little, you have to find justifications to get it, when it costs nothing, you now have to find justifications not to take it.

The reality of torrenting is just yet another reflection of this time-tested maxim; people who are torrenting are not, in the main, actually living up to even the scant promise of "if I like it I'll donate", and the easier it gets to download things for free, the more the incentives to actually pay for the product vanish, just as in any tragedy of the commons problem

Why should *I* bear the burdens of covering the costs if *you* aren't? You'll always find some poor saps who will do it for the greater good, to be sure, but it will never be enough to prevent the resource from dieing; this is every bit as true in entertainment as it is in farming, fishing, pollution, whatever.

All of which is moot, however; even if we lived in your fantasy world where allowing people to download everything at no cost wouldn't crush the incentives to produce the product in the first place (I assume there'll be talking dogs and rabbits that ejaculate rainbows after masturbating too), that doesn't change the fact that you have no damn right to make content producers play by those rules, that simply isn't how economics works. *Both* parties have to agree to the exchange - you have no more right to take what I produce, pat me on the head, and say "I'll tip you if I feel like it" anymore than I have the right to force my product into your hands and steal a $20.00 bill out of your pocket for the privelage.

The real punch in the balls in this whole hissy fit you babies are throwing because you're all going to have to find somewhere else to steal shit online is the fact that bit torrent itself is essentially stealing bandwith from other consumers - bit torrent, used by less than 1% of all users, accounts for the lion's share of all bandwith consumed (file sharing in general follows the same trend; only the tiniest minority of users account for frequent file-sharing, yet the bandwith consumption is so great that practically 99% of it is the result of file-sharing applications), yet they sure as hell don't pay proportionate to their usage - service providers can't yet do a pay as you use formula, and even if they did it would be trivially easy to just leech bandwith off of normal users, and so the costs of bandwith production (believe it or not, it's not free) *have* to be passed on to the basic user who will never use the bandwith their paying for - yes, Virginia, every time you BT a movie off the Pirate Bay, you are literally stealing money out of my wallet. That the lot of you have the audacity to cry about this is absolutely disgusting. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

"Totally wrong view on this. Piracy exists and will exist whether games are "protected" or not. But what copy protection does is create *more* pirates, not less. Because the legitimate copy will potentially cause all sorts of shit (you yourself see it), while the pirated copy works without problems.

Same for movies. I can't watch DVDs unless I break the "protection". For Blu-ray it's even worse. Even if I had the equipment (a Blu-ray drive and a strong enough processor), I couldn't watch some movies, because... you guessed it, the "protection". All it does is drive people to piracy. No sense in buying the original if I can't watch it, I'll of course go for the downloaded version which works out of the box. The music industry actually figured this out to a degree, iTunes is now DRM-free.

Don't believe the propaganda of the content industry."
This thread marks the death of whatever respect I might have had for Gusar.
