I need first hand accounts of battles
Aug 4 2009, 7:28 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 4 2009, 11:19 PM EDT
I am quickly approaching a major battle and I need reference material.. I need biographies of people involved in war, or some damn good fiction that gives the soldiers perspective. Documentaries or films also helpful. I've got a major battle to write in the final chapters of Reunion, and I haven't found any decent reference material outside of some videos on You Tube. Please help. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Watch Saving Private Ryan, and Blackhawk Down. EXCELLENT examples of real combat (or at least as far as hollywood is concerned).

We Were Soldiers has pretty realistic combat stuff.

Probably not a good idea to ask people to relive combat. War changes people, a lot don't want to talk about it. 1  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Agreed.
Thats not a question veterans like to be polled about. There are authors that are willing that have recounted experiences from famous battles that you can put a movie to for better understanding.

Band of Brothers is a great miniseries that you may want to look into... has interviews too.

In my life, I have seen something like that situation happen at least a few times. Seeing a reaction like you might expect from Animal Mother in Full Metal Jacket is not unheard of.

"I agree with Birdman and Accept. Most Vets don't want to talk about their war.

I would have one of the moderators here delete this asap. And then don't post shit like this again. "
The1Russter just wants some reference material for his fic. You don't have to raise a big stink about it.

Thank you rref. I think they have "Band of Brothers" at my local Library. I will check with them and if they do I will watch it.

To be clear, Russter is requesting references to books or movies--no first hand accounts. (I believe the subject line may be a little unclear, but the message is). Let's direct this to movies and books, please. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Plan on being emotionally drained after watching both those movies, along with We Were Soldiers and Band of Brothers....

One of the final scenes of We Were Soldiers , where the Americans are being overwhelmed on the hill, no escape routes, waiting for dawn for the helicopters to give them their only hope, air support. The sound goes to compete silence, the choppers swoop in with the electric machine guns ripping the enemy apart with surreal slow motion technique and the song "Many men have guns" playing. Its intense, chilling.

You might try some of the less well know war films as well. I'll give you two of my favourites (with Youtube links since the actual DVD's could be hard to acquire in the States).

"Stalingrad" - A German film about the Siege of Stalingrad. It stands apart from other WWII movies in that it is shot from the German perspective.

"Passchendaele" - A recent Canadian film about the Canadian Corps' involvement in the Battle of Passchendaele (and WWI in general).

Thank you Canuckinator. I have checked out the links. Damn that third one. It was like I was right there. I hope the director got an award for shooting that. I felt real.

Thank you everyone.
