Three members of my immediate family have been injured by drunk drivers, including my father who had to have his hip replaced. While I am against enacting laws to restrict the use of alcohol, I am all for legislation that strictly punishes its misuse. My sympathies to the Mrs. LM. Do you find this valuable? |

"He is 21, there is a utube video of him celebrating his birthday with some friends, he was trashed, it was at least the second utube video of him drunk. Not counting the Dekker tapes , now that I think of that. "I didn't know he had done videos of himself while being trashed. I harshly condemn that behavior. I don't care if he gets drunk on a private residence but there's no reason for him to broadcast that image through video. I don't know what he's thinking. That's really poor role modeling for someone in his position of visibility. I hope he straightens this behavior out starting today. I'm very disappointed in his behavior regarding drinking in general and this DUI. :-( Do you find this valuable? |

Respect the actor's talent. But no two ways about it, you don't drive drunk.

My immediate thought when I read this was; "Arrrgh! You idiot! What have you done?!" Drinking and driving is both irresponsible and extremely idiotic and there is no excuse for doing it. So if he's definitively guilty in this case, he deserves the punishment coming to him. However, the details of this incident are so far sketchy at best. They say he side-swiped a cyclist. Fair enough. But was that actually the case? Does anyone know that for sure? Could it be that the cyclist did in fact ride out in front of him and swerved at the last second? I'm a cyclist myself and I know all about close calls. We're just as crazy as drivers on the road. Skimming between cars, chasing gaps, trying our luck at every corner. People should also consider that BECAUSE he's a semi-famous actor, the "victim" would use this as an opportunity to weasel money out of him. And the Press blows it entirely out of proportion, of course. And actually, assuming this happened in the evening or early night; what's a cyclist doing on the road at that time of day? Personally, I'd prefer to reserve judgment on this until the facts are known. Just because he was drunk at the time (for which he is inexcusably guilty), doesn't mean he was responsible for the "collision". Just some of my thoughts. I tell you what though, if he is proven entirely guilty; he's gonna have more than a kick up the ass to pay for it. 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Not that I'm saying he's not guilty (because chances are it was his drinking that resulted in the accident - "duh"), but it's interesting that you say that. Shia TheBeef (of Transformers fame) was caught DUI, I believe, but he was "let off" because the sober person that he crashed into was actually in the wrong (he jumped a red light, or did something wrong with a red light.) That said, like I already said, statistically speaking Dekker is likely to be the one responsible for the collision. Don't think I'm not saying that he isn't guilty (but Veran does have an interesting point, which has been the case in recent "young celebrity plays tag with his car" cases) - so don't lynch me with your donuts of doom! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. "My immediate thought when I read this was; "Arrrgh! You idiot! What have you done?!"Either way, he put himself in this whole position by drinking and driving. If he is accused of anything (true or not) he only has himself to blame for it. As you can probably tell, I have absolutely no sympathy for Dekker. Do you find this valuable? |

"Not that I'm saying he's not guilty (because chances are it was his drinking that resulting in the accident - "duh"), but it's interesting that you say that.I know. It's never a clean and cut case in these situations. Imagine if a pregnant mother-to-be were to step out during a red light and be hit by a car. It would be entirely her fault for taking such a risk, but because she was pregnant, the driver would be branded and put in chains regardless. Same as if an old woman stepped into traffic expecting the horse and carriages to stop for her. But like Deadpool said: statistically speaking Dekker is responsible. @Andy: Yeah, he's still guilty of putting himself in a situation where something like this *could* happen. You know, when I first arrived at the thread page I saw "Dekker Arrested" and a little further down "John Connor is dead", and was immediately struck with the assumption that Dekker had been sent to the chair. Momentary shock for me (pun intended). :P

Accidents are accidents and they happen to everyone. But if you drive drunk, you are breaking the law right away which makes the "accident" almost always willful negligence. Its why he's being charged with a felony. If he had taken a taxi, never would have happened. We will find out soon enough if he blew the breathalyzer or if they maybe forced him to draw blood (because of personal injury), this stuff will become public record.

In my neck of the woods, the term "accident" is no longer used. It is always referred to as a "crash".All of the paperwork I have seen including police reports and legal artifacts all say "crash". Do you find this valuable? |

I once "hit" a motorcyclist at the top end of Shaftesbury Avenue in London, where it crosses Tottenham Cout Rd. (my bad. It was the junction Shaftesbury Ave/Charing Cross Rd) I never, ever drink and drive, so I was stone cold sober, and I was not moving, having stopped at a red light. The bike courier came up on the outside, and tried to squeeze past to get ahead of me to the light. That part of the road has solid raised sections , dividing the lanes. He hit a bollard, and toppled right in front of me. His bike hit my car. He was completely uninjured. He leapt off came round to me and accused me of hitting him. I think he wanted to get off a damage claim. Luckily, the guy in the car next to me got out, went to the biker and shouted at him: "You pillock! I saw what you did."The lights changed. The biker got his bike up and roared off. It happens, and I was lucky that guy came forward. @LM -as others have said, really sorry to hear what happened. Drinking and driving is insane. People never consider the fallout. Strength to you both. Do you find this valuable? |
