I'm sort of confused by something. (warning, technical discussion!)

This is an excerpt from http://terminator.wikia.com/wiki/T-800

"The T-800’s do not feel pain and they do not have nerves, but they can sense injuries. We believe that the T-800 can do this through the use of impact sensors or as part of the overall sensor "sphere" that the unit generates, approximately akin to counter battery radar. There may be various impact sensors that record localized vibrations in the armor shell and, by extrapolation, "sense" where the damage in the T-800's living tissue is. This data then allows the T-800 to conduct low-complexity self repairs. "

But I always assumed that the nerves were responsible for the T-800's capability to sense injury, not some kind of a sensor in the endoskeleton. I mean, the nerves are used to move the muscles in the organic flesh covering (as we see when Uncle Bob smiles in T2) so is it really so much of a stretch to say that they're responsible for physical feeling, as well?

And I do believe that they feel pain, but they don't have a programmed reaction to it, they only register it and say "Okay, there's where I was just shot. Now save that data so I can go back and fix it later."

And this brings me to this question: when the T-800 was chasing Sarah and Kyle through Cyberdyne at the end of The Terminator, and it was breaking through that door, how did it know that its hand had found the handle? Did it sense that something was keeping its arm from moving there? Maybe there are some kind of sensors in its joints and actuators that can detect stuff like that?

Okay I didn't see that is said that the 800 has no nerves. But we know that's bull because Uncle Bob was able to smile. Unless there are some kind of miniature meat hooks in the endo's face (that we've never seen, by the way) it just couldn't smile or make any other expression. Do you find this valuable?

It's called feedback. It found resistance against its arm and that's how it knew it was touching the door handle.

Don't take everything that is on that wiki as canon.

Yeah, I know, but still it seems strange that someone would write something like that.

I mean, there's so much counter-evidence, you know? I mean, all they have to do is watch that "Uncle Bob smiles" scene in T2 and "Complications" of TSCC. It is "Complications", right? The one where Cameron talks about feeling?

Oh, see, I didn't know the term for it. That's basically what I was trying to say.

The smile scene isn't in the theatrical release of T2, but it doesn't matter. The T-800 wouldn't even be able to talk properly if he didn't have nerves in his infiltration sheath, or muscles.

You should examine the sensors on this guy's hand:

The endoskeleton "interacts" with the skin in order to sense "pain". In T2 when the biker crushes the lit cigar into Arnold's chest, he doesn't feel pain, but his neural network understands that a lit cigar pushed into "human skin" is not an act of kindness.

The results are evident

Per your question about the hand and the handle, the Terminator was programmed to recognize that doors have handles, and when a door is locked, it can break through and grab the handle to open the door. It was easier and faster to open the door that way then to continue to pound on the metal door until it caved in.

Even though 5 other people already said it, I'll throw in my interpretation.

They don't feel pain. They have sensors that detect pressure and materials against their skin. Just like humans do. Unless they detect that said pressure could interfere with the mission, they ignore it. If they decide that said pressure could endanger the mission, they will "terminate"(lame pun, yes.) the problem.

lol Tell that to Cromartie. I know it was a bank vault, but he had that thing ripped off in like five seconds. The T-888s are probably a lot stronger than the 800s, though, and Arnie was pretty damaged, anyway. Cromartie was essentially brand new.

I still think they feel as in depth as we do, it's just that since they're machines it doesn't affect them like it does us. If we had a huge chunk of our skin missing, we'd be screaming and on the way to the hospital, whereas they can just shrug it off since they're not programmed to drop on the ground, scream, and beg for an ambulance.
