Terminator Franchise to be Auctioned Off
Nov 1 2009, 8:46 PM EST | Post edited: Nov 1 2009, 8:46 PM EST
The rights to the Terminator film franchise will be auctioned this month in a deal that will test Hollywood intellectual property valuations at a time when film industry profits are under pressure from falling DVD sales.

The sale, which comes weeks after the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were sold for $60m – and is likely to exceed that – has sparked considerable interest because Terminator is a rare example of a blockbuster film franchise not controlled by a big studio.

I never thought I would see "Ninja Turtles" and "Terminator" in the same sentence! :-)

So what does this mean for the SCC-verse?

I don't know if those rights were different from the movie stuff, or what.

If whoever bought it wanted to make a new season of TSCC, could they?

Yes, but from a practical standpoint, the new owners would probably want to be reasonably certain they could make money off a 3rd season or DVD before they took the chance. This news source is speculating that it will go for more than 60 million. They are going to need to sell a lot of DVDs to make that back plus the cost of producing a movie.

Halcyon owns certain elements of TSCC. Those items that are a part of the T-franchise would fall under Halcyon. However, any new characters, or plot lines introduced in the show would fall to WB.

I know fans banded together to buy a billboard. Anyone got a loose $60 + million lying around?

Would H and WB have strings attached after the sale? Doesn't the sale mean they are selling their right to make money off of T and TSCC?

New characters, hmm.

So differences like T-1001 vs T-1000 and T-888 vs T-800 & T-850 become meaningful.

I'm not TOO worried about this.

One, James Middleton probably knew this day was coming and yet he's still fighting for the show.

Two, whoever the new buyers are I'm sure they'll strike a similair deal with WB for SCC.

The problem with all this is.. timing. We now have to wait for a new buyer to find out any information on where we stand.

That's one problem. It's actually the lesser of the two.

You see, you need someone actually pushing for some kind of continuation here. That person, from what we've seen in official articles, is Middleton. Well, he works for Halcyon, not WB. So the company auctioning off the rights very much takes Middleton out of the picture here.

That's the biggest problem with the whole mess. Shame of it is, looking at Halcyon's bankruptcy, I can't shake the feeling that it would have happened even if T4 had been a hit in the US.

Middleton may work for Halcyon but again, he would have known this was coming. He's still very much in the fight.

So, I don't see that as a problem.

Well, watch to see what happens with his job. The company's kind of going under here, and they're going to lose the rights to the franchise. He may look elsewhere for a job.

But if he still works for Halcyon, and the company sells off the Terminator franchise, his involvement really ends unless he changes companies. That's why it's a problem. The guy would have to care about the franchise so much he'd jump ship for it.

Does mean McG's T5 is probably out the window though, I will say that.
